Aunty Steff’s Visit – a Johnny Cake Experience!
Today we had the absolute pleasure of welcoming Aunty Steff to preschool for a special hands-on cultural experience—making traditional Johnny Cakes! Aboriginal people have made these delicious bread treats for generations, and today, our children have the opportunity to learn how it’s done using traditional methods.
Aunty Steff set up three interactive stations where children took turns—three at a time—mixing flour and water to create their own dough balls. A big thank you to Katie, who did a fantastic job helping the children through the process with patience and enthusiasm.
Once the dough was ready, Aunty Steff showed the children how to safely build a small fire, using rocks to form a border. One by one, the children joined her, learning how to wrap their dough around long sticks and hold them over the fire—pretending to fish while their bread slowly cooked. It was such a magical moment!
When the Johnny Cakes were ready and cooled, the children had the choice of spreading on traditional jams like Davidson Plum or Lilly Pilly, both native ingredients. We even used our very own lemon myrtle as a seasoning—grown right here at preschool, alongside our Lilly Pillys and bush plums.
The best part? Tasting the Johnny Cakes—and they were absolutely YUMMY!
It was a day filled with culture, learning, and joy. Thank you, Aunty Steff, for sharing your knowledge and creating such a special memory with us.
