Today Aunty Steff visited the preschool to teach the children about traditional weaving. First Steff showed us some pictures of Aboriginal people with a wonderful woven mat that they had worked on together. We then looked at plants that are used for weaving and we found that we had this plant in our bush tucker garden. We went to collect some leaves and Aunty Steff showed us how to use your fingernail to make the reeds into smaller pieces. The children then had a turn at doing this. We then looked at some pictures of different baskets and we felt some real baskets at preschool. We talked about how baskets are used for fishing and we discussed the eel trap. We looked at a picture of eel traps and fishing baskets. Then we talked about how baskets are used for collecting berries. We talked about how hair and plant materials can be used to make rope. Then we all had the opportunity to create our own weaving stars or some children made fishing rods.
