NAIDOC 2022 Painted Pebble Project

During NAIDOC Week 2022, Visual Arts students in Years 7–10 learnt about the local Awabakal Dreaming Story ‘When the Moon Cried’, which explains how Belmont Lagoon came to be. Students looked at how Aboriginal people have used symbols to tell stories for the last 30,000 years. They examined the artwork of Aboriginal artist Richard Campbell and how he used symbols to tell this Dreaming story.

Students then hand-painted pebbles, inspired by contemporary Aboriginal emoji symbols. Approximately 100 pebbles are going to be taken out into the local environment by these students and will be left for others to find.

Belmont High School CAPA faculty would like to thank Bunnings Bennetts Green for their generous donation of pebbles which allowed us to complete this project.
